CARBON FRAME REPAIRS
(NOTE: Effective 8/22/2011, I
have temporarily suspended my Frame Repair Service. This is
because my primary focus is Custom Made Bicycles and the demand for
those has been such that I simply do not currently have time to
complete repairs and related refinishes in a timely fashion. I
am, however, still accepting a limited number of repaints and
restorations. Should you have related questions, please let me know.
Thank you for your interest!)
DON'T THROW AWAY
YOUR BROKEN CARBON FRAME!! I have been doing repairs to
Carbon Frames for over 10 years.....long before others started
doing it....in fact, back then, most shops and MFG's simply told
folks that they had to throw away their frame, no mater how
minor the damage. This seemed very wasteful to me and so I
started repairing them. From cracked and broken tubes to
loose dropouts, if you have a problem, I can likely fix it, including
any necessary paint work.....from spot touch ups to complete repaints.
Prices start at $130 for repairs to a chain or seat stay, plus
shipping and paint work, if any. More complex repairs, of course cost
more, however, frames can generally be repaired for less than the cost
of a new frame. Because of the unpredictable nature of damage to
carbon, pricing is based on an "as quoted" basis. Therefore,
if you send me your damaged frame, or some good clear photos of the
frame and it's damage, I will quote you a price. If you send me
your frame and I can not repair it, or the cost is prohibitive, there
is no charge, other than the cost of return shipping.
A few recent repairs are shown
below. In addition, if you click on the photo of the
silver Trek 5500, you will find a sequence of photos showing its
transformation from trash bin candidate to a fully restored and
upgraded machine. You can see another 5000 series restoration and
upgrade HERE.
(The early Trek 5000 series frames are good candidates for restoration
and upgrade.. they are well made, durable, straight, stiff, and
remarkably light)
Finally, Be sure to check out my carbon repair flickr
gallery for more photos of recent repairs.

| This Trek 5200 had a broken
chain stay. I repaired the stay with new carbon and
repainted just the two chain stays with a complementary theme
(the original pearl color was nearly impossible to match),
saving the frame, the paint job, the original decals, &
Mary's money! |
This early Trek 5500 came in with a
cracked top tube, chains suck damage to the right chain stay, and several loose tube joints. I repaired the
damage and restored the finish, including painting on period
logos. In addition, this frame originally had top mounted cable guides, which
I upgraded to side mount cable stops. |

This nearly new Trek Madone 6.9 had suffered a serious break to
the top tube. Photos here show before and after shots of the
repair. The required repair area included part of the
"Trek" lettering, note that I was able to match the
lettering and the paint, including the yellow area,
exactly. |

Seat stay repairs to a Cervelo...The stay was damaged all of the
way through and around....its as strong as ever now. When doing
repairs to carbon in areas where there was no paint, the repair
area can sometimes be seen through the new clear coat because of
the different orientation of the new fibers. If this is
something that you do not like, I can paint the area and blend
it. For example, in this case, the rear brake bridge area
had been painted black by the MFG, I could have painted both
seat stays black from the bridge down to below the repair areas
and the repair would have been invisible after the clear coat
was applied, etc. This customer thought that the repair looked
cool the without paint and so the area was not painted,
etc. |

More Carbon Repairs....This Gary Fisher
carbon mountain frame had a broken seat stay. Photos here
show the frame during and after the repairs. The repair area was
then spot painted and blended and the frame looks and performs as
good as new. |

|
| Here is an example of a common carbon
frame problem....the drop out on this carbon fiber
mountain bike had separated from the chain stay. We were
able to remove, prep, and re-bond it to the frame...... as good
(actually better than ;-) ) as new! |

|
| It's kind of hard to see, but this
Specialized had impact damage to the top tube that was about the
size of a $.50 piece. These are before and after shots. Note
that the graphics were matched perfectly. I had to replace the
"IZED" in the logo and, of course, the red, white
(which was a pearl), and dark red stripes. |

damage to both chain stays. |
